Plastic Photonics
A significant step towards flexible, conformable, plastic photonics has been made with the Institute's colleagues in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, including Prof's Pethrick and Skabara.
A 100micron thick membrane, was formed by deposition on water, then UV curing. This substrateless membrane had shown stimulated emmission, with the ease of manufacture opening up the possibility of mass manufacture and even disposable optical devices.
The Institute has already received enquiries from industry excited by the prospect after the original article was reported in the Highlights from European Journals section of Europhysics News.

Dr. Erdan Gu gave an invited talk “Novel micro/nano light sources- AlInGaN micro-pixellated LED arrays and their applications in instrumentation, hybrid inorganic/organic optoelectronics and optical communications” at the 4 th International Conference on LED and Solid State Lighting (LED 2010) in Seoul, Korea, February 3-5, 2010.
Professor Martin Dawson and Dr. Erdan Gu in the Institute of Photonics (IOP), University of Strathclyde attended the 8th International Symposium on Semiconductor Light Emitting Devices (ISSLED 2010) held in Beijing, China in May, 2010. In Beijing, they visited the Research Center for Wide Gap Semiconductors (RCWGS), University of Beijing. The research teams in IOP and RCWGS have been carrying out collaborative research on nitride semiconductor materials and devices for more than six years. Based on these fruitful collaborations, the IOP and RCWGS have been recently awarded a “Scotland-China Higher Education Research Partnership” grant. This partnership project provides support for exchanging PhD students and aims to develop a long-term joint PhD programme. Supported by this programme, two PhD students, Yuebin Tao and Ningyang Liu from RCWGS started working in IOP from 25 th May, 2010. Two PhD students in IOP, Peter Schlosser and Jonathan McKendry, will work in RCWGS from July, 2010.
When in China, they also visited the Semiconductor Research Institute, China Academyof Science, Tianjin University, Harbin Institute of Technology and Wuhan University of Technology to introduce institute’s research activities and discuss the potential research and education collaborations.
